U-M retirees have a number of health plan options available. The health plan options differ in the benefit levels they provide and the hospitals you can use. The amount of university and retiree contributions toward retiree benefit plans will vary based on hire date, age, retirement date, eligibility for Medicare, coverage level, and health plan selected.
Medicare
Your U-M health plans are designed to coordinate with your Medicare benefits, and it is important that you and your dependents enroll in Medicare when you first become eligible. See Medicare for more information.
Your Health Plan Coverage Options
Most U-M Retirees have the following health plan coverage options:
- Health Alliance Plan HMO
- Comprehensive Major Medical (CMMB), a BCBSM plan
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Community Blue PPO
- U-M Premier Care

The University of Michigan in its sole discretion may modify, amend, or terminate the benefits provided with respect to any individual receiving benefits, including active employees, retirees, and their dependents. Although the university has elected to provide these benefits this year, no individual has a vested right to any of the benefits provided. Anyone seeking or accepting any of the benefits provided will be deemed to have accepted the terms of the benefits programs and the university's right to modify, amend or terminate them.
